How to Install Door Threshold Bars on Uneven Floor Levels?
Often after renovating a room, or your bathroom, you end up having different floor heights, sometimes with a small gap between the floor finishes. This is a common problem most homeowners and builders are facing once the building projects are completed – how to finish the floors edges and the flooring finishes are different from one room to another, or at various heights?
The most commonly used solutions for various height floors are transition bars, also called door threshold strips.
Once you find the one that matches the required features: distance between the floor edges to be smaller than the width of the transition strip, colour to match the interior requirements, the height difference to match the maximum height allowed by the threshold you choose - the next question is how to install the newly purchased threshold on different floor levels?
The threshold bars available on Toppus Group shop are extremely versatile, being delivered in smaller sizes of 0.9 m, or as long as 2.5 m length t-bars, available in various colour and suitable for even floors or for various floor heights. Our multi-floor bars are elegant and easy to install.
The most popular threshold bars are the once with invisible screws.
Below are the steps on
How to install door thresholds for different floor levels
- Unhinge the door.
- Measure the length of the door/ required threshold size – we supply thresholds in 0.9 m lengths or 2.7 m for wider doors.
- Measure the height difference between the different floor levels – you may need threshold for even floors, if there is no difference in height, or thresholds for various heights.
- Check the distance between the different types of floors – it usually differs from 1 mm to 40 mm. Some gaps are even wider and require additional treatments or extra wide transition bars.
- Cut the chosen threshold to the required length.
- Mark 5 to 6 positions on the floor (for doors of up to 1 m) and drill holes of the required diameter Ø, subject to the type of dowels/screws to be used.
- Drill the holes for the plastic dowels/ or the screws
- After measuring and cutting the transition bar to the correct length, slide 5 or 6 plastic plugs in the channel underneath the Multifloor door strip and position them as per the holes drilled.
- Gradually tap the door-bar in place with a wood block on top to avoid damage to the surface of the transition bar or floor.
- Re-hang the door.
IMPORTANT!!!
During the threshold installation watch out if you have underfloor heating pipes or wires! Alternatively Self Adhesive Tape can be purchased separately and used to stick it down, or Self Adhesive Threshold kits should be considered for your flooring project.
Tools used to install the Multifloor Threshold Bars for uneven floors
- Tape measure to measure the length to cut.
- Hack-saw - to cut the Transition Bar to the correct length.
- Drill - to create the 6 mm diameter holes needed for the plastic one-way holding posts (posts have barbs that hold the posts in place once you press them into the holes).
- Pencil or chalk
- Screwdriver
- Plugs (if not supplied with your threshold kit)
Why do you need a threshold when having different floor levels? Advantages.
- T- bars will make the transition from one flooring to another smoother.
- Elegant way to complete a flooring finish under the door.
- Hygienic – hides all the raw materials left exposed between the different floor finishes.
- Wheelchair-friendly.
- Safe - it creates a smooth surface that reduces the risks of home accidents generally caused by different level floors like raised tiles, or transitions from carpet to vinyl/ tiles/microcement.
- It protects the floor joints.
- Creates an easy transition between two separate doors with separate types of floors.
- The quicker way to “hide” the imperfections along the old floor edges.
At Toppus Group we supply various door threshold designs for your flooring projects.
